La Caisse des Français de l'Étranger (CFE)
The Caisse des Français de l'Étranger (Fund for French Nationals Abroad) enables French nationals abroad to keep the Social Security benefits they had in France.
The CFE is a private fund providing a system of Social Security for French expatriates around the world.
What is the CFE?
The CFE is the Social Security Fund for French nationals living abroad. Financially independent, the CFE is a private organisation providing a public service. It is governed by the Social Security Code and is supervised by two ministries: the Ministry of Employment and Solidarity and the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industry.
The CFE: some key figures
- established in 1978,
- more than 200,000 individuals covered by the CFE worldwide,
- 4,400 corporate members,
- 44 approved care facilities in 17 countries where third-party payment services are available to members.
What risks are covered by the CFE?
Voluntary membership of the CFE is available to individuals or via your employer.
The CFE covers three risks:
• Illness, maternity and disability,
• Industrial accidents and occupational diseases,
• Old age (Social Security retirement benefits managed by the CNAV – the National Retirement Pension Fund).
Expatriate employees can insure against one or more of these risks depending on their family circumstances, the particularities of their host country and their financial resources.
Other French nationals living abroad can insure against illness and maternity, whatever their circumstances.
CFE contributions are based on your employment status, your resources, your age and the options selected. You can estimate the level of your contributions on the CFE site.
By joining the CFE as soon as you leave France, you ensure the continuity of your entitlement: no waiting period and no lost contribution quarters for your retirement pension.
"If you’re covered by Social Security, you stay covered by Social Security."
