dangerous countries

Who would invest abroad or send employees on an international assignment without having analyzed the country’s safety situation first? This is the only way you can take adequate protection measures. When exporting or when staff is travelling to the most unstable areas of the planet, taking out specific coverage is essential. Spotlight on the 2014 ranking of the most dangerous countries in the world.

2 studies to identify risky countries

Two annual studies rank countries according to political risks and other threats to peace:

  • the Political Risk Atlas, by Maplecroft, which ranks 197 countries and included 52 indices,
  • the Global Peace Index, published by the Institute for Economics & Peace, which compares 162 countries across 22 indicators.

Other institutions or companies also regularly offer global risks maps without necessarily ranking countries one by one. For example, in many countries, the Department of Foreign Affairs provides online information regarding the most insecure nations in the world.

Measuring danger: what criteria?

To rank countries according to their level of dangerousness, studies are based on a number of criteria such as:

  • macroeconomic environment,
  • number of homicides per 100,000 people,
  • number of refugees and displaced people,
  • human rights landscape,
  • infrastructure quality,
  • political instability,
  • military expenditures as a percentage of GDP,
  • terrorist activity,
  • relations with neighboring countries.

As each country receives a score, ranking is then possible.

Some international insurance companies exclude high-risk areas. To get adequate health, assistance and death & disability coverage, do tell your insurer which countries your staff will be travelling to. In some cases, taking out a safety solution (kidnapping, detention, extortion) to protect your employees will be paramount. You may also protect your investments by taking out export insurance.
